Jasmine Blank and Sophie Edwards with their Brisbane Sprint Medals

Baily Somerville with his Junior Championship Medals

The club competes in six swim meets throughout the season which form the Brisbane regional championships. After the first three events held prior to Christmas the club was sitting 2nd on the first division table. The sprint championships were held early February and even though we had some good performances we finished 7th overall dropping us down to 3rd on the table. We had eight swimmers make finals at the meet with Sophie Edwards (9) winning silver in the 50m Backstroke and Bronze in the 50m Freestyle and Jasmine Blank (10) winning Bronze in the 50m Breaststroke.

Next up at the end of February was the Junior Brisbane Championships for the 12 years and under. We had a small but confident group of swimmers compete with some amazing results. They finished third overall cementing our third place on the ladder but more importantly getting us within striking distance of first and second. The stand out performance of the meet was from Baily Somerville (11) who made the final of each stroke in the 100m finishing with Gold 200m IM, Silver 400m Freestyle and 100m Butterfly, 4th 200m Freestyle and 5th in 100m Freestyle, 100m Backstroke and 100m Breaststroke. Our other medallists were Connor Wallace (12) Gold 800m Freestyle and Sophie Edwards (9) Gold 50m Backstroke and Bronze 50m Freestyle.

It was then up to our senior swimmers to do their best at the final event in the middle of March. I spent the weekend with and watching our swimmers and there was no doubt about them doing well as they performed and bonded as a team in what can be a very individual sport. Every one of our swimmers competed beyond our expectations and finished the meet second overall which was enough to lift us into first place on the table. There were many standout performances, among them these swimmers; Michaela Ryan (15) Gold 200m IM, Gold 200m Freestyle and Bronze 100m Freestyle; Jody-Joy Davie (18) Gold 200m Flystyle, Ben Garozzo (14) Silver 1500m Freestyle and Bronze 400m Freestyle.

REDLANDS SWIM CLUB FIRST DIVISION PREMIERS!

During all this excitement our swimmers also competed at the State Sprint Championships where they performed well with lots of PB’s. We had lots of top ten finishes with Sophie Edwards (9) winning Silver 50m Backstroke and Samuel Speedie winning Bronze 50m Freestyle and 50m Butterfly.

The Australian Age Nationals in April is the final main event for our swimmers this season.
