Swimming March 2015
Posted on Tuesday, 17 March 2015
The Redlands Swim Club has had an extremely busy start to the year with the main focus being on the sprint championships at a club level. Most of our swimmers have also been competing in their school, district and regional carnivals. The club hosted two swimming carnivals, one in January and one in March.
Redlands had 38 swimmers qualify and compete at the Brisbane Sprint Championships in February which was a 30% increase on last year. All our swimmers swum well competing in 98 individual events of which they swam 54 personal best times. We had 17 top ten placings with 3 of our swimmers picking up medals – Jessica Black (13) Silver in 50m Breast, Callum Brennan (10) Silver in 50m Breast and Ashley Linley-Dove (10) Bronze in 50mm Breast. Twenty three of the swimmers who competed were aged 11 years or younger which is a great sign for the future of the club. Seventeen of our swimmers continued on to the Queensland State Championships two weeks later gaining 11 top ten placings and 2 bronze medals.
This year the club held a Development Meet to promote swimming to our swimmers who are not at the elite level as yet. We had 18 clubs attend bringing 171 swimmers to compete which was a great outcome considering we held the meet in mid-January which was still in the school holidays.
The first weekend in March the club held its annual Copper Coast A-Grade Meet where we had a solid attendance from 22 clubs with 183 swimmers competing. The weather was perfect and it seems we have been successful in attracting more Gold Coast teams to our meets which is encouraging for the future.
Congratulations from all at the club go out to our three girls who competed in the National Open Water Championships in Perth. The dedication and effort that these swimmers put in to qualify to compete at this level is amazing. Kristen Wallace finished 7th in 5km 16 years, Veronica Pangrazzio finished 11th in 5km 17/18years and Emily Jamieson finished 20th in 5km 15 years.
